Focusing on negative thoughts can be very harmful not only to your thinking processes, but to your personality as well.  Thinking negatively becomes a vicious pattern where from one negative thought arises another.  It only takes patience and perseverance to turn the negative into positive.  Here are three winning strategies on how to have positive expectations in life:

1.  Develop self-awareness by doing a self-check daily.  This will eliminate negative expectations and therefore, you will not get used to them.  Because negative thoughts often develop unconsciously, you tend to get so used to them that you do not notice them anymore.  And that is unpleasant because when that happens, it becomes a bad habit.  Be productive, and switch on to the positive while switching off from the destructive negative thoughts.

2.  Challenge your negativism.  Be on guard of your thoughts at all times.  Challenge and change your negative thoughts to a positive attitude.  It only takes a little willpower and concentration but if you truly put your heart into it, you are going to be the most optimistic person ever.  And when you notice yourself beginning to think negative thoughts, drop it.  If you are feeling a little worried about your ability to finish and deliver a very good output at work, do some self-talking.  Tell yourself to “be productive” and to “feel positive.” Tell yourself that you will do your best and everything will work out fine.  This type of self-talk can get you to thinking and acting in the most positive manner.

3.  Adopt a habit of having positive expectations.  Affirm yourself each day by saying “Today is going to be a great day!” “Everything will be as I planned it!” Surely, those statements will create a lot of positive energy in you.  When you encounter challenges, see them as opportunities to overcome your weaknesses.  Work hard to develop a positive attitude and bring out that winning person in you.

Humans, by nature, occasionally feel the sudden and overwhelming gush of fear.  And this fear prevents us from doing something we want to do – from taking risks to achieving goals in life.  It hinders us from being successful at anything we lay our fingers on.  But don’t worry because it is a natural phenomenon that has been a common problem experienced by all, cutting across all ages, sexes, and cultures.  The good news is that you have the power to control it.  If you allow fear to take charge of your life, it can lock you out of society.  You will be like a turtle always hiding in its shell, scared of sticking its neck out into the world.  But you should understand that fear is merely a conditioned response and it can be defeated.  Here are three steps to overcome your fear.

1.  Re-think your expectations.  You experience fear when you dwell on negative expectations about things that concern you.  Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, focus on your strengths and capabilities and always do your best.  This will surely turn your negative expectations to positive ones!

2.  Don’t overemphasize your fears.  Look at your fear as something you must defeat in order for it to go away.  If you have fear of public speaking and your boss expects you to speak in front of an audience, you tend to worry that he might lose his respect for you if you do not deliver.  If you keep on thinking like this, chances are, you will not deliver your best.  An effective approach is to prepare yourself for the speech by practicing a lot instead of dwelling on negative “what-ifs.”

3.  Do what you fear most.  Conquer your fear by facing it head-on.  Remember, fear is merely a feeling.  It can only harm you if you let it take charge of your life for a long time.  If fear challenges you, choose to ignore it and it will go away for sure.  Remember, worrying about what you fear is like sitting in a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but will get you nowhere.
